What the app may access
- Camera, when you take a dog photo or use the Train tab's camera coach.
- Photo library, when you choose an existing dog photo.
- Microphone, when you record a bark, listen hands-free, use Quiet minute, or start Home monitor.
- Location, while you use the app, only during a walk.
- Apple Health, only if you turn on Save to Apple Health, to save walks as workouts.
- Notifications, if you turn on barking alerts, training reminders, or the hold timer on Apple Watch.
How data is processed
- Dog photos, camera frames, and bark audio are analyzed locally on your device.
- Breed lookup uses a bundled local catalog.
- Training progress, your read history, and your walks are stored on your device.
- Bokedex has no server. The app does not upload your photos, video, or audio to Bokedex.
- The app does not include analytics SDKs, advertising SDKs, or an account system.
Home monitor (Premium)
- Home monitor lets you leave a spare iPhone or iPad at home to note when your dog barks while you're out.
- The monitor device listens only after you tap Start listening, and keeps listening with the screen locked until you tap Stop monitoring. iOS shows its microphone indicator the whole time.
- Sounds are checked on the device. Only episodes where a dog is heard are kept; speech and other sounds are discarded.
- For each episode, Bokedex keeps the time, length, a bark-type hint, an excitement level and, if you turn it on, a short audio clip of up to 6 seconds. The monitor also records its device name, battery level, and when it last checked in.
- If you're signed in to iCloud, this information syncs through your own private iCloud database to your devices signed in with the same Apple Account. The developer cannot see or access it. Without iCloud, it stays on the monitor device.
- If you turn on barking alerts, iCloud sends a notification to your devices when barking goes on. The notification includes your dog's name and how long the barking lasted.
- Episodes, clips, and alerts are deleted automatically after 7 days, on the device and in iCloud.
Pack
- Pack is an optional, invite-only circle for the people you walk with. It is off until you start or join a pack.
- A pack is shared through Apple's iCloud sharing. You invite named people with the share sheet, in Messages or Mail; there is no public link and no way for strangers to find a pack.
- What the members of a pack see: each dog's card (its name, breed or breed family, level, mastered skills and card finish), milestones such as a new level or a mastered skill, how many days you trained that week, and sticker reactions.
- Walks are shared only if you turn that on. A shared walk shows the dogs on it, the distance, how long it took, the day and the part of the day (such as morning), posted a little after the walk ends. The route, places, exact times and walk notes are never shared.
- Pack shares no photos, no messages and no other text. The only words you type are a pack name, picked from a list or checked by a word filter, and your dog's name; a dog name the filter rejects shows to the pack as “Dog”.
- Your bark reads, behavior notes, Problem moments, Home monitor data and walk routes are never shared with a pack.
- Pack data is stored in iCloud, in the iCloud of the person who started the pack, and shared only with the people in it. There is no Bokedex server, and the developer cannot see or access it. Each member's milestones are deleted after 60 days.
- In Pack settings you can report a problem, hide a member, remove a member (if you started the pack), leave a pack, delete a pack you started, or turn Pack off. Leaving, deleting or turning Pack off removes what you shared from iCloud.
Walks
- Walks record your route while you walk your dog, on iPhone or Apple Watch.
- Bokedex asks for location “While Using the App” only, never “Always”. It uses your location only during a walk, from when you tap Start walk until you tap Finish or Discard. Tracking continues with the screen locked so the route has no gaps; iOS shows its location indicator, and a Live Activity shows the walk on the Lock Screen the whole time.
- For each walk, Bokedex keeps the route, time, distance, pauses, the notes you tap (such as pee, sniff or met a dog) and which dogs walked.
- Walks are stored on your iPhone. They are not uploaded to Bokedex and not synced to iCloud, and the developer cannot see them. If you share walks with a pack, the route is never shared (see Pack).
- Walks stay until you delete them, delete the dog they belong to, or delete the app.
Apple Health (Premium)
- Saving to Apple Health is optional and off by default.
- When you turn on Save to Apple Health, each saved walk is written to Health as a walking workout with its distance and route. Health data stays in Apple's Health app under Apple's privacy rules.
- Bokedex never reads your Health data. Health data is never used for advertising or shared with anyone.
- On Apple Watch, a walk runs as a workout so it keeps going with your wrist down. If Save to Apple Health is off, that workout is discarded when the walk ends.
Apple Watch
- The watch app receives today's training plan from your iPhone, and sends finished training sets, daily check answers, and walks back to it.
- This uses Apple's connection between your iPhone and your paired Apple Watch. Nothing is sent to a Bokedex server.
- The watch keeps only the current plan and any sets or walks still waiting to reach your iPhone.
Control and retention
- You can remove the app and its local data from your device at any time.
- You can remove Bokedex's iCloud data from your Apple Account's iCloud storage settings, and leave or delete a pack in the app.
- You can delete any walk in the app, and turn off Save to Apple Health at any time. Walks already saved to Health can be removed in the Health app.
- You can revoke camera, microphone, photo-library, location, Health, or notification access in iOS Settings.
- App Store purchases and subscription status are handled by Apple.
