Protect the item
In early practice, the dog should not be able to self-reward from the setup item. Use your hand, a container, distance, or a leash setup so backing off is the easiest successful choice.
First reps
- Show a low-value item safely.
- Wait for a look-away, head turn, or check-in.
- Mark the disengagement.
- Reward from your other hand or pocket.
- Reset before fixation builds.
When it gets harder
Outdoor scavenging and moving items are much harder than a quiet indoor rep. Increase difficulty slowly and keep rewards strong enough to compete.
Bokedex outputs are best treated as context for owner decisions. For health concerns,
safety concerns, panic, biting risk, or sudden behavior change, involve a veterinarian,
certified trainer, or qualified behavior professional.
